After Surgery… Recovery is Vital.

PIQUE’s founder, Dr. Nell Smircina, has extensively studied the effects of surgery on the body, and how acupuncture can drastically improve the outcomes of recovery. We encourage any patient looking to optimize their recovery process to book a consultation directly with Dr. Nell before your surgical procedure if at all possible.

We are here to make your recovery as streamlined and comfortable as possible. We coordinate with your surgeon or current care team during this important time for healing. For optimal recovery, planning is extremely important.

FAQ: Acupuncture for Optimizing Surgical Recovery

Ideally, you should have the initial consultation before your surgery so there is a clear baseline. However, many of our patients find out about our services after the surgical procedure has already been performed, and they still get great benefit to their recovery.

You can receive acupuncture as soon as 24 hours after a surgical procedure. We offer concierge services for those who are recovering at hotels or at their home and prefer not to come to the office.

Acupuncture at any time can be beneficial, but the focus is different based on the goal. Getting acupuncture before surgery can be beneficial for anxiety/stress, immune system strength and overall health. Post-surgical acupuncture will address the common issues (listed above) and can help expedite your recovery.

This is a common fear about acupuncture in general, but thankfully acupuncture does not need to be performed locally (in the painful area) for you to receive the benefit. We avoid local inflamed areas and work distally (away from the swelling and pain) to calm your entire nervous system. As you heal and pain decreases, we can work on things locally like scar tissue.

Yes. Although for the common issues experienced with surgery (listed above) it’s ideal to get in sooner rather than later, there are still many benefits from acupuncture. Reducing scar tissue is one of them.

Acupuncture is an adaptogenic modality, meaning it simply helps your body handle stress more efficiently and effectively. Your body already knows how to heal, acupuncture is just able to increase circulation and help adjust your nervous system in a way that allows for optimal healing.
